iOS 27 Is Out Today — Is Your iPhone Supported, and Should You Update Tonight?
By Ricky Browning · Browning PC, Valdosta, GA
Apple released iOS 27 this afternoon, September 14, 2026. If you've already got the red badge on Settings, here's the whole post in three lines: your phone is supported if it's an iPhone 11 or newer; the new Siri only shows up on an iPhone 15 Pro or newer; and yes, I'd update tonight — after a backup. The rest of this is the why.
Key takeaways
- iOS 27 released September 14, 2026. It runs on the iPhone 11 and later (plus iPhone SE 2nd gen and later). No iPhones were dropped this year — if it runs iOS 26, it runs iOS 27.
- The rebuilt Siri and the Apple Intelligence features need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. On an iPhone 11–15, you get the update but not the AI assistant.
- Apple also shipped iOS 26.7 today — security fixes only — and shows it as the default update. iOS 27 is the option at the bottom of the screen. The XR and XS stay on iOS 18; their latest security update, iOS 18.7.10, came out August 17.
- Back up first, know your Apple Account password, plug in on Wi-Fi, and plan on 15–20 GB free.
- A warm phone and faster battery drain for two or three days after a major update is normal — the phone is re-indexing. Give it time before you panic.
- My honest advice: update tonight, after a backup. That's what I do on my own phone every year. The one exception is a phone that runs a card reader, work app or medical-device app — ask that vendor first.
Every September I get the same two texts within a day of each other. One says "my phone updated and now it's hot and the battery's dying." The other says "it says my phone can't update, do I need a new one?" So let me answer both before they get sent this year.
Which iPhones can run iOS 27?
iPhone 11 and later, plus the iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later. Apple did not cut any models this year — every phone that runs iOS 26 runs iOS 27. That's the good news, and it's a little unusual; the rumor mill had the iPhone 11 on the chopping block right up to WWDC in June, and Apple kept it.
If you're on an iPhone XR, XS or XS Max, those were dropped last year at iOS 26 and stay on iOS 18. Apple hasn't cut them off yet — their most recent security update, iOS 18.7.10, came out August 17 — but they won't get new features, and at some point the security updates will stop too. You don't need to replace it this week. You do need to know it's on borrowed time.
| Your iPhone | iOS 27? | New Siri / Apple Intelligence? | What I'd do |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 Pro, Air, Duo, 18 Pro | Yes | Yes — everything, including the newest Siri voices | Update when convenient |
| iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, 16 series, 17 | Yes | Yes | Update when convenient |
| iPhone 11 through 15 (non-Pro), SE 2nd/3rd gen | Yes | No | Update for security and the fixes; don't expect the AI stuff |
| iPhone XR, XS, XS Max | No (stays on iOS 18) | No | Make sure iOS 18.7.10 (August 17) is installed; start planning a replacement over the next year |
| iPhone 8, X and older | No (stays on iOS 16) | No | It's time — more in how to buy a computer in 2026; the same logic applies to phones |
What's actually new in iOS 27?
The headline is Siri, rebuilt on Apple Intelligence. You can type to it, it remembers the conversation so you can ask follow-ups, and it can pull from what's on your phone — your messages, calendar, photos — to answer. Apple says the heavy lifting runs on the phone when it can and on Apple's own servers when it can't. If you've used ChatGPT, that's the shape of it. But read the table again: this only appears on an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. If you install iOS 27 on an iPhone 13 and Siri seems the same as yesterday, nothing is broken. That's just the hardware line.
The rest, in order of how much I think normal people will notice:
- Liquid Glass gets a transparency slider. Last year's see-through design drew a lot of complaints about screens being hard to read. Now you can turn it down yourself, in Settings. This is the change I'd point most people to first.
- Photos editing. A Clean Up tool for removing things from a shot, a Reframe option, and an Extend tool that fills in beyond the edge of a photo. The AI-heavy ones need the newer phones.
- Safari groups tabs by topic on its own, which helps if you're the type with forty open.
- Speed. Apple says app launches are up to 30% faster and photos load up to 70% faster. Take vendor numbers with a grain of salt — but the phones I set up this fall will tell me soon enough.
- Child safety and parental controls got expanded. I'll go through those properly once I've had a week with them — if you set up a child account using my Apple child account walkthrough, check Screen Time after you update.
Why does Software Update show iOS 26.7 instead of iOS 27?
Because Apple released both today, and it's showing you the safer one first. iOS 26.7 is security fixes only, no new features. It's the default at the top of Settings > General > Software Update; iOS 27 is offered as a separate option at the bottom of that screen. Apple does this every year, and in a few weeks it'll flip and start pushing iOS 27 as the main update.
So why does it exist? For people who can't move yet — a phone locked to a work app that hasn't certified iOS 27, a card reader, a medical-device app. It lets them stay patched without changing anything. If that's not you, there's no reason to take the smaller one. Scroll down and pick iOS 27.
Should I update to iOS 27 tonight?
Yes. I update the day it comes out, and I'd tell you to do the same — with a backup first. Apple's day-one releases have been solid for years, the security fixes are baked in, and waiting mostly just means you install the same thing later. Here's how that breaks down:
| If your phone is… | Tonight | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Your business line, or you run your shop from it | iOS 27, after a backup | Do it at close of business, on the charger, so it's done by morning |
| Tied to something that has to work — a card reader, a work app, a medical-device app | Ask that vendor first | Until they say yes, install iOS 26.7 so you're still patched |
| Personal, and you like new features | iOS 27, after a backup | Expect a warm phone for a couple of days; that's normal |
| Personal, and you just want it to keep working | iOS 27, after a backup | It'll keep working. Turn the Liquid Glass slider down if the screen is hard to read |
| An XR/XS | Make sure iOS 18.7.10 is installed | That's all there is; take it |
I know the "wait two weeks" advice is out there, and I understand it — a day-one release is a big field test. But in practice the problems people bring me after an update are almost never the new iOS itself. They're a backup that was eight months old, a forgotten Apple Account password, a phone that ran out of space halfway through, or a third-party app that needed its own update. Fix those four things and updating on day one is boring, which is exactly what you want.
What should I do before I update?
Back it up, and check that it actually finished
iCloud is easiest: Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. Then look at the "Last successful backup" line and make sure it says today. If iCloud is full, back up to a computer instead. Step-by-step is in how to back up your iPhone to iCloud. Nearly every "I lost everything" call I get after an update is somebody whose last backup was from eight months ago.
Know your Apple Account password
A major update will very often ask you to sign in again, and if you haven't typed that password since you bought the phone, tonight is a bad time to discover you don't know it. Look it up in your password manager, or reset it before you start the update, not during.
Make room
The download is several gigabytes and the installer needs working space on top. Figure on 15–20 GB free. If Software Update complains, the quickest wins are Settings → General → iPhone Storage → offload the apps you haven't opened in months, and clear old videos. Here's how to free up iPhone storage without losing anything.
Plug in, Wi-Fi, and don't need the phone for an hour
Do it on the charger, on home Wi-Fi, when you're done for the day. The install itself takes anywhere from twenty minutes to the better part of an hour depending on the phone, and if it interrupts a call or a card payment you'll wish you'd waited. Bedtime is the right time.
My phone is hot and the battery is draining — is iOS 27 broken?
Almost certainly not. After a major update, the phone spends a few days re-indexing your photos, mail and search in the background, and Apple's own guidance is that it can run warm and drain faster while that happens — you can even see an "iOS Update" line in Settings → Battery. Give it two or three days on the charger overnight before you decide anything's wrong. If it hasn't settled after a week, Settings → Battery will show which app is eating it, and a restart fixes a surprising number of the rest. And if a specific app stopped working, check the App Store for an update before you blame Apple — most day-one problems are apps that hadn't been updated for the new version yet.
The bottom line
Nobody got left behind this year, which is a nice change. If it's an iPhone 11 or newer, you can update; if it's an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, you'll actually see the new Siri; and no matter what you've got, there's a security update waiting for you today that you should install. For almost everybody that's iOS 27, tonight, after a backup — same as I'm doing. If your phone runs something that has to work tomorrow, ask that vendor and take iOS 26.7 until they say go.
🍎 Want somebody to do the backup, the update and the settings for you?
I do this for families and business owners around Valdosta, Hahira and Lake Park all the time — back it up properly, run the update, turn the Liquid Glass down so you can read it, check Screen Time on the kids' phones, and make sure your card reader or work app still runs. If your phone is older and you're wondering whether it's time, I'll tell you straight. No contracts, no pressure — just your local South Georgia tech guy.

Common Questions
Which iPhones can run iOS 27?
iPhone 11 and later, plus the iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later. Apple did not drop any models this year — every iPhone that runs iOS 26 runs iOS 27. The iPhone XR, XS and XS Max were cut at iOS 26 and stay on iOS 18, which still gets security updates.
Should I update to iOS 27 today?
Yes — that's what I do. Back it up, plug it in, and install iOS 27 tonight. Apple's day-one releases have been solid for years, the security fixes are in there, and waiting mostly just delays the same update. The one exception: if your phone runs a card reader, a work app or a medical-device app, ask that vendor first, and install iOS 26.7 (security fixes only, released the same day) in the meantime.
Do I need a new iPhone to get the new Siri in iOS 27?
The rebuilt Siri and the Apple Intelligence features need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. On an iPhone 11 through 15 (non-Pro) you get iOS 27 — the design refinements, Photos and Safari changes, security fixes — but not the AI assistant. That's the honest reason to be underwhelmed on an older phone, and it isn't a reason to buy a new one.
Why is my battery draining after updating to iOS 27?
For the first few days after a major update the phone re-indexes photos, mail and search in the background, and Apple's own guidance is that it can run warm and drain faster until that finishes. Keep it charged and give it two or three days before deciding something is wrong. If it hasn't settled after a week, check Settings > Battery for which app is responsible.
How much space does iOS 27 need?
The download itself is several gigabytes, and the installer needs working room on top of that. Plan on 15 to 20 GB free. If Settings > General > Software Update says there isn't enough space, offloading unused apps and clearing old videos usually frees enough — see our how-to on freeing up iPhone storage.
What should I do before updating my iPhone?
Three things: back it up (iCloud or a computer — confirm the backup finished with today's date on it), make sure you know your Apple Account password because the update may ask for it, and plug it in on Wi-Fi. Then start it when you won't need the phone for an hour.
