Homework moved onto your Wi-Fi, which means your router just became school equipment. Three things matter now: it has to work (enough speed, and no dead zone at the homework desk), it has to be secure (an unpatched router is a real target), and it should protect your kids at the network level — because filtering set up on the router covers every device in the house, including the ones phone controls never touch.

Valdosta City started back on August 3rd and Lowndes County on the 5th, so we're a week in — right about when the honeymoon ends and the complaints start. "The Wi-Fi kicked me off my test." "It won't load." I get these calls every single year in the back half of August, and the fix is almost never what the parent assumed.

Two weeks ago I wrote about keeping kids safe on their devices — phones, tracking, apps, Georgia's new school phone rules. This one is about the pipe all of it runs through: your home network. Here's the checkup I'd run at my own house.

Do you actually have enough speed?

Probably — and that's the surprise. Most people blame "slow internet" when the real problem is coverage. But do the math for your own house first, because it takes thirty seconds. Add up what runs at the same time on a school night:

A busy evening — one kid on a video call, another streaming, a console going — lands somewhere around 25–30 Mbps. For reference, the FCC's current benchmark for what counts as broadband is 100 Mbps down / 20 Mbps up. So if you're on a modern cable or fiber plan, you almost certainly have the speed. Two real culprits I'd look at before upgrading your plan: upload speed (cable plans are lopsided — great download, weak upload — which is exactly what breaks video calls), and background updates hogging the line. Most consoles and PCs let you schedule updates for overnight. Worth ten minutes.

Why the homework desk has the worst Wi-Fi in the house

Here's the one that's actually costing your kid their test. The router usually sits wherever the cable comes into the house — a corner, a closet, behind the TV. The kids' bedrooms are usually the farthest point from that. Wi-Fi fades fast through brick, plaster, ductwork, and mirrors, so by the time the signal reaches the desk it's limping.

  • Free fix first: move the router. Central, out in the open, up off the floor. Not in a cabinet, not in the laundry room, not behind the TV. This alone solves a shocking number of "slow internet" calls.
  • Wire the desk if you can. If the homework spot is a fixed desk, a single Ethernet cable beats any Wi-Fi upgrade ever invented. Rock solid, no drops mid-test.
  • Mesh beats extenders. A cheap range extender usually just rebroadcasts a weak signal — you get bars but not speed. A real mesh system (or a wired access point) gives the far end of the house genuine coverage. I install UniFi for this constantly.
  • Test where it hurts. Run a speed test standing at the actual homework desk, then again next to the router. If the desk number is a fraction of the router number, it's coverage — not your internet plan.

Is your router a security problem?

This is the part nobody thinks about, and it's the part the FBI keeps warning about. In April 2026 the FBI issued a public alert about foreign actors exploiting unpatched home routers to quietly intercept traffic — passwords, logins, the works. A year earlier they warned that criminals were hijacking end-of-life routers (ones the manufacturer no longer updates, generally 2010-era and older) and renting them out as criminal proxies.

The good news is the fix list is short, free, and takes about fifteen minutes:

Update the firmware

Log into your router (or its phone app) and check for updates. Many modern routers do it automatically — verify yours actually is. This is the FBI's number-one recommendation, and it's free.

Change the default admin password

Not your Wi-Fi password — the admin password you use to log into the router itself. Factory defaults like "admin/admin" are published online for every model made. While you're in there, the FTC adds a tip most people miss: log out of the admin screen when you're done.

Turn off remote management

Also called remote administration or remote access. It lets someone reach your router's settings from the internet, and almost no home needs it. Off.

Check your encryption — but don't panic

WPA3 is the current best, and most routers ship in a WPA3/WPA2 mixed mode that lets older devices still connect. Here's the honest part other blogs get wrong: WPA2-AES is still considered secure by CISA — you don't need to run out and buy a router. What you do need to fix immediately is an open network, or anything using WEP, original WPA, or WPA2-TKIP.

Put the smart stuff on the guest network

CISA recommends keeping smart TVs, plugs, cameras, and other gadgets on a separate guest network from the computers holding your real data. Most routers do this with one checkbox. (More on locking things down in my Wi-Fi security guide.)

⚠️ How old is that router? If your router came from your ISP six or eight years ago and has never been touched, it may no longer receive security updates at all — which puts it squarely in the category the FBI says to replace. If you don't know, that's exactly the kind of thing I can tell you in about two minutes.

Filtering that covers every device, not just the phones

Most parents set up parental controls on the phones and stop there — which leaves the tablet, the smart TV, the Switch, and the laptop wide open. The fix is to filter at the router, because everything in the house goes through it.

The simplest version is free and takes one settings change: point your router's DNS at a family-filtering service. Log into your router, find DNS settings (often under Internet or WAN), and enter one of these pairs:

Type those carefully. OpenDNS's regular unfiltered addresses end in .222 and .220 — the family-filtered ones end in .123. One wrong digit and you've turned the filter off without knowing it.

Now the honest caveat, because I'd rather you have real protection than a false sense of it: router filtering is a good first layer, not a lock. It can be routed around by a phone switching to cellular data, a VPN app, or certain browser privacy settings. Use it as the floor that covers the whole house, and keep device-level controls on the phones — I walk through those in my parental controls guide.

The school Chromebook: what it does and doesn't cover

Two opposite misconceptions here, and most parents hold one of them.

Misconception one: "the school filter stops at the driveway." Usually false. District filters like GoGuardian and Securly work through the managed device and school account — not the school's network — so they generally keep filtering on your home Wi-Fi, or anywhere else.

Misconception two: "the school's got it covered, then." Also false, for three reasons worth knowing:

  • Districts choose their own off-campus rules. Federal law only requires filtering on the school's own internet. Some districts extend identical filtering home, some relax it, some don't extend it. Ask yours — it's a fair question and they'll have an answer.
  • It protects exactly one device. The Chromebook. Not the phone, tablet, TV, or console — which is where most of the actual risk lives.
  • You can't add your own controls to it. Family Link supervision doesn't apply to a district-managed Chromebook; the school's policies win. Some districts do offer parents a companion app (Securly Home is free to parents when the district buys Securly) — worth asking about.

So: the school filter and your home filter cover two different sets of devices. Neither replaces the other.

  • ☐ Move the router somewhere central and open
  • ☐ Install router firmware updates
  • ☐ Change the router's admin password (and log out when done)
  • ☐ Turn off remote management
  • ☐ Confirm you're on WPA3 or WPA2-AES — not WEP or an open network
  • ☐ Move smart TVs and gadgets to the guest network
  • ☐ Set family DNS on the router (1.1.1.3 / 1.0.0.3)
  • ☐ Schedule console and PC updates for overnight
  • ☐ Ask the school about their off-campus filtering policy

How much internet speed does a family with kids in school need?

Add up what runs at once rather than guessing. A video call takes about 4 Mbps each way, a 4K stream 15 Mbps, a 1080p stream 5 Mbps, and console gaming only 1 to 3 Mbps. A typical evening — one kid on a call, one streaming, a game going — lands near 25 to 30 Mbps. Most South Georgia homes have plenty on paper, which is why a slow homework night is usually a Wi-Fi coverage problem, not a speed problem.

Why is the Wi-Fi bad in my kid's bedroom?

Distance and walls. Wi-Fi fades fast through brick, plaster, ductwork, and mirrors, and most routers sit in a corner of the house near where the cable comes in — often the far end from the bedrooms. Move the router to a central, open, waist-high spot first, since that is free. If the far bedroom is still weak, a mesh system or a wired access point fixes it properly, where a cheap range extender usually just spreads a weak signal.

How do I block bad websites on all my kids' devices at once?

Change the DNS setting on your router, which filters every device on your Wi-Fi at once — including game consoles and smart TVs that phone parental controls never touch. Cloudflare's free family service uses 1.1.1.3 and 1.0.0.3 to block malware and adult content; OpenDNS FamilyShield uses 208.67.222.123 and 208.67.220.123. It is a strong free first layer, but it is not a lock: cellular data, VPN apps, and some browser settings can route around it.
